Lesson 2 Discovering Your Hot Buttons

Welcome to Lesson Two. Congratulations on becoming a Gold Member. Your doing so shows your commitment to start Pressing Your Own Buttons™ and Take Control of Your Life So Others Don’t!™ Again, I invite you to view the following video.

Lesson 3 Observation Inferance and Evaluation

This lesson is particularly important. Here you will take another step toward learning how to identify, and then cool, your “hot buttons.” I’ll show you how to look differently at the things other people say, do, or how they look that press your buttons.

Lesson 4 Is What You Thought They Said What They Meant?

In Lesson 4 of Pressing Your Own Buttons: Take control of my life so others don’!™ you will take the next step in discovering and managing your personal “hot buttons.” You will learn the importance of language and come to understand the need to be not only specific and concrete in your use of language but also to be precise!

Lesson 5 “Hot Buttons”–Troublesome Social Stimuli

In Lesson 5 of Pressing Your Own Buttons: Take control of my life so others don’!™ you will gain a fuller understanding of what we mean by “button pressors.” When it comes to what presses our buttons, the expression “different strokes for different folks” is the order of the day.

Lesson 6 Where Did That Come From?

In Lesson 6 of Pressing Your Own Buttons: Take control of my life so others don’!™ you will learn:

  1. To distinguish between direct learning and indirect learning experiences.
  2. Identify and describe how you learned directly to view certain social stimuli as troublesome.
Lesson 7 Cooling Your “Hot Buttons”

Welcome to Lesson 7. In this lesson you will increase your understanding of “Hot Buttons.” Now that you have a general understanding of how you learned to experience certain social stimuli as troublesome, aversive, or controlling (“Hot Buttons”), we can turn to gaining an understand of how you might change your reactions to them.

Lesson 8 Feelings, Emotions, and Actions

In Lesson 8, as you can see, I will be telling you about the relationship among our feelings, emotions, and our actions. Really, what you don’t know will surprise you — I think!

Lesson 9 Internal Stimuli

In Lesson 9, you will learn about internal stimuli. They are a special kind of “social stimuli” because you are the person that generates them. As their name implies, they are stimuli you experience internally. Like external social stimuli, internal stimuli can cause you to react impulsively and be less able to focus you attention where it will do you the most good.

My Story

I Spent 7 Years (yes, 7 years) in High School Before I Learned the Keys to Happy and Successful Living!

Can you imaging spending 7 years in high school? That is just what I did! At the time, out of more than 1500 students in my high school I was one of only two so-called “7-Year Men.” At the time, in Canada, high school was a five-year process. So, even in Canada I spent two years longer in high school than was normal.

I’m sure that few, if any of my teachers, ever thought I would amount to much. In fact, the Head of Guidance for my high school told me, “Why don’t you quit? You’re just wasting your time.”

I didn’t quit and later proved her wrong!

You did it with Godly counsel, in a way that was most productive, supportive and enlightening. Thank you for generously sharing your wisdom and for directing me to tools and resources that helped me to grow into a better person. Thank you for asking me all the right questions and for being so positive and encouraging.’ “Most of all thank you for never giving up on me. • “Gary Page and I have had a professional consultative relationship for over 30 years. I have always found him to be kind, wise, caring and superb at understanding situations from all angles, spoken and implied. Gary Page is an outstanding counselor and I know he will do a superb job at whatever challenge he faces.”

Judith Gabor, Ph.D. - Executive Coach

  • “I found the section about Emotions very enlightening. This section gave me much to consider about how to control my emotions ... I had always believed that the emotion came first and the action after. The study taught me that we become emotional due o our actions and also that we can’t blame our shortcomings on situations or other people ... the study gave me examples on how to think and act constructively.”

  • It has been a good material (sic) in dealing with various groups of people, races and in cultural association as well. The program has given me an insight as to how an individual could create a better environment in the aspect of communicating with one group to another.”

  • I would just like to tell you that I never dreamed that behavior and emotions could be looked at in such a ‘specific and concrete’ way.”

  • “As a parent, I would jump in and scold my children every time a problem came up. This created angry arguments and sometimes resentment that lasted for days. Gary Page’s book certainly helped change this response. It offers specific examples and an easy-to-follow communication skills program that a parent can customize to fit their own parenting style. I wish this book had been available years ago.”

    Duane Newcomb - Author

  • “I recommend Gary to those who seek assistance to cope with life’s challenges, or to those who seek to find resources to move on to make a greater contribution to their world. Gary is creative in seeking solutions to the challenges facing all of us. His positive outlook is supported by an energetic commitment to see movement. He is a compassionate listener as he discerns ways in which those he works with can make a positive step in their lives and in the life of the greater community.

    Claire Braun - Pastor

  • I would like to have used this type of program when I was 20 years old – it may have been helpful for me then to better deal with my parents and my childhood experiences.”

    Research Study Participant

  • This was interesting; it really makes me think about things that I didn’t think were important before. My mother passed away when I was 18, a year later my best friend died in an accident while I was with him ... I think if I could have observed some or all of this material in high school I would have had a way easier ride feeling more comfortable with myself and other people.”
